Tempranillo
Tempranillo is a black-skinned grape originating from Spain that produces robust wines. It is one of the oldest varieties of grapes and enjoys a long and noteworthy history, including a presence in ancient Phoenician settlements. It is also widely planted in Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. Tempranillo was introduced into California via the Central Valley as Valdepenas. Due to its thick skin, it requires extremes of temperature to grow and ripen. It is low in acidity and sugars, so it is frequently blended with Grenache, Carignan, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In Portugal, it is referred to as Tinta Roriz and is often blended in Port wines. Tempranillo offers flavors of plum, berries, tobacco, and leather.
