Petite Sirah
According to Carole Meredith, Professor Emerita Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, genetic testing has shown that Petite Sirah (also known as Durif) is related to the true Syrah of the Rhone Valley and an old French grape called Peloursin from Provence. When produced well, Syrah and Petite Syrah wines can be very close in flavor and texture. California Petite Sirah tends to be high in flavor and tannins. Petite Sirah is dark and relatively acidic, with flavors of blue fruit, black fruit, and plums. The word "petite" in the name refers to the size of the berries, not the flavors of the wine.
