Merlot
Merlot is one of the most popular red varietals around the world, coming in third just behind Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape is believed to be related to Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It can range from simple, fruity wines, to richer barrel-aged examples. Its plum flavors and smoothness make it highly popular, and it is freqently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to tone down its higher tannin levels.
